Historic Sparta is the capital of the prefecture of Laconia. It has unique natural beauty as it is built east on the foothills of Taygetos and next to the Evrotas river. It is a modern city with large, green parks and preserved neoclassical buildings.

Sparta has historical sights that the visitor can admire, such as the Ancient City Theater, the Archaeological Museum, the Koumadarion Art Gallery, and Ancient Sparta. Mistras is 5 km away from Sparta, where, apart from the Byzantine churches, the Palace, and the houses of Laskari and Fragopoulos, there is the Byzantine Museum.

Sparta being your base, you can visit Ancient Amykles and Vafeio, Mycenaean Pellana, port of Gytheion, Mani, Diros caves, the Byzantine Geraki, Monemvasia and various Byzantine monasteries.

In the wider area of Lakonia you will find very beautiful beaches for swimming. The beach of Mavrovouniou is a good choice, located 50 minutes from Sparta. It is a large stretch of beach with sand. It is ideal for wind surfing lovers because of frequent winds in the area. At about the same distance from Sparta, you will find the beautiful beaches of Vathi and Selinitsa with the imposing wreck "Dimitrios".
